I worry not that my beloved is afar
I worry not that she was taken away
I worry from now till I win the war
She will be aging each passing day

    :-)

    // Hahaha, talk about priorities.//
Kamban talks about Rama suffering with viragam, so much so that when he enters the pond to take a dip it sizzles and fumes like when a blacksmith plunges a heated pieces of iron into water (what imagery!). But Kamban never has Rama actually speak about his feelings like this.

Looks Valmiki also will have to be read. ars longa, vita brevis.

Mine. Glad you liked it :-)

  4. Quite a lovely way to dig into a human being's mind where he not only dislikes to age, he doesn't like his beloved aging too, especially when separated. Any online version of Valmiki's Ramayana with the translation available?

  6. Hmm this guy Martin Buckley who wrote An Indian Odyssey, which was a travelogue trailing Rama's path across India and into Lanka, I remember told me for an interview that Valmiki's version is very, very gruesome in its description of war and just as adult in its description of matters of well, you know discretion. Have always wanted to read it as well.

  7. So I see.

Kamban is pretty gory on both counts.

His descriptions of gore are so elaborate they are discomfiting. I would say they smack of a bloodlust. In sundarakaaNdam Seetha tells Hanuman the destruction that will befall Lanka when her Lord launches war. Her rage-fueled imagination of physical violence is jaw-dropping. Draupadi blood-shampoo level only.

    Totally postworthy.

Valmiki - when to read I say :-(
