Death of the Author

" Either he lives a life of unbridled experiences or possesses an imagination fueled by unreal levels of perversion. Either case, his is so good that his personality is bound to be despicable" என்று பரவலாக நம்புகிறார்கள்.

'it was too good to last anyway' என்று சிலர் க்ரூரத் திருப்திப் படுகிறார்கள்.

  1. Super dagalti! I liked the circular ending :D Where did you get the inspiration for this unusual theme, so far removed from Kamba ramayanam and kavithaigal?

  2. I guess you must've guessed that I must not have read your last 3 or 4 postings in Tamil (likely coz I was pressed for time/enthusiasm to undertake the thankless task of "reading" -- "laboring thru" -- a lingo I have no trouble otherwise engaging with, aurally, verbally). And to do your bit to redress that, you resort to this (seemingly) cheap tactic of starting your post with "porno win Aval A nilAI paarth u..." Guess what? It worked! I HAD to keep reading up until the seed for "nar-porno" was spawned. I'm guessing other readers too (like VC attests to above), who normally arrive here perhaps looking for a take on Adorno, would be pleased by this take instead invoking Tamil porno.

  3. Vijay/Lexi, inspiration enna...this is a theme I obsess about often. Porno is a placeholder for any writing, just exaggerated to extreme.

Living and creating are, at some level, substitutes and competitors. To be able to depict an emotion well one has to be able to rise about above it, thus compromising the ability to feel it as well as everyone else. So rather than an artist being 'sensitive', I always wonder if his 'sensitivity' is disproportionately spent in his art at the expense of his life.

Plus of course other things like: 'motivation for writing', the personality that writes being at odds with, or even being a threat to, the individual.

Same for the art-consumer (reader, viewer). The emotion, situation depicted with higher aesthetics in art can sometimes hold higher appeal, relatively devaluing their mundane counterparts in reality.

So, perhaps at some stage we have to say it's time to stop going to museums

  4. Hmm. Rather at odds with my view of the artist/author as he being the one who feels the emotion the most - and is able to capture that feeling in all its depth and lay it out for the reader. The reader will realize maybe 10 percent of it (like you mentioned in the woody post). So to what level would the artist need to have felt and showed for the reader to call it great art!

  5. thevc, the artist understands it deeper than anyone else, of course. But then he is constantly observing - 'taking notes' so to speak! Being completely absorbed, swept away, enraptured - are the things he places at the altar (to use exaggerated imagery).

Think Nolan's "The Prestige" - who gets the applause vs. who chokes to death.

  6. I partially agree - but think Wordsworth's daffodils:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
    Which is the bliss of solitude;

So you can feel everything in full measure, reflect on it later, and then lay it out to the audience.
