Nehru and கமலா சங்கரன் were the most satisfying reads this year - the latter owing to a gnawing realization that I will possibly read ancient Tamil literature and still leave a lot on the table.

is one of my favourite lines in Kamban thus far. Where the farm labourers in Kosala do not weed out gardens taken by the beauty of their women (the weeds are kuvaLai flowers which remind them of the women's eyes and the lotuses which remind them of their feet - how can they weed them out?).

I took the last line as any 'normal' reader would as 'is there any escape for (us) lesser mortals when they are enamoured of women.

Actually பிழைப்பர் actually is 'will they wrong', which turns the last line to 'will simple men, who love their women, ever wrong them?'. And the reason that is the valid reading is because the analogy itself is taken from சிந்தாமணி by திருத்தக்கத் தேவர்.

In SinthAmaNi the மள்ளர்கள் are hesitant for the same reason and then have a drink and a few stanzas go about weeding anyway . It looked like Kamban wanted to use the analogy but wanted to make a point that reneging wasn't in keeping with the simple folk - left unsaid is that the same virtue cannot be ascribed to those of higher position of wealth and intellect.

And Kamban doesn't stop at that. Apparently, in the entire kambarAmAyaNam, not a single man is showing plucking a flower. Whoa!

How can one claim to have read anything at all?

I see that shamelessly trumpeting a reading list is forcing me to read more than I used to do. Strongly recommending it.

    Sjöwall and Wahlöö

  9. 'Sjöwall and Wahlöö''s Martin Beck series are best read in Chronological order, to get a clear idea of the evolution of Beck.

Anyway hope you enjoyed the book. The current Scandinavian crime fiction masters and the genre of police procedural itself owes a great deal to
    Sjöwall and Wahlöö
