  1. From the PGW section in the article that I linked to previously: If you want to be thought a great novelist in your own time, you have to sound intellectual. If what you write is popular, or entertaining, or funny, you're ipso facto suspect. Exaggerating for effect could be due to a tendency to play to the gallery or secretly coveting an award of sorts or approval by a group of people. In science you will notice that they wait a really long time before they award the Nobel prize (with some exceptions) - eg the case of S.Chandrasekar. I suspect they are trying to make sure it's not a fad, and the discovery/invention has real merit. The Arts, on the other hand seem to reward instantly - the Booker prize is an example, and these decisions are invariably swayed by the prevailing political/ideological leanings of the people who influence these decisions, flavour du jour, etc. To paraphrase Max Planck "Real Literature advances one dead body at a time"

  2. Hmm...perhaps. But this is not so much about the flavor du jour. I have a struggle even with reputed classics in demanding a 'truth' of it, which is not there - or not even necessarily supposed to be there.

But to be fair, if my 'standard' were to be imposed most of the otherwise inexpressible expressions f ind a forum. For instance this doodle about the plasticity of memory in the face of contradiction between one's nature and actions - would have to sit unexpressed (which may be a good thing !) if not inserted into some narrative that weaves it in (not exclusively but rather substantially) thus achieving better expositional effect.

  3. "DH Lawrence" "dramatization" "verisimilitude" -- ippidi moondrey aangila vaarthaigala mattum pottutaa? Naanga vandhu odaney naakka thonga pottundu padichiduvom, illa? LOL.

OK, we admit. Romba tempting-aa thaan irukku, enna sollirukingo nu paakkalaam nu. Aaana orey 'black and blue' fonts. Ouch! kannellaam valikardhu.

Kutti kutti ezhutha vera irukku. Enlarge panni padikkalaam nu paartha ennoda task-bar la irundha "magnifying glass" icon ipponu paathu kaanaama poyiduthu. Cha! Time-ey seriya illa. Apparama vandhu itha padikkaren. Ippo poi unga Kasparov post-a pakkaren.

Liked a couple things in the comments though: The Planck postulate (per BNB's paraphrase) = Priceless. The "plasticity of memory" you mention reminds me of "The Persistence of Memory" -- Dali's most famous painting (the one with the melting clocks), from the '30s.

Absolutely, then how else could one rationalize the success of "The God of Small Things"?

  7. Lexi, I made the font bigger. The least I could do :-)

Muppet, porumai. Comments surface after moderation.

Muppet, have you noticed how we don't understand science we consider the scientist a genius and when we don't connect with a piece of art we are quick to condemn it as a bombastic fraud. I am not suggesting TGOST is a great novel (I haven't read it) and nor am I holier than thou (I have kept Bergman in abeyance as far as according any greatnesss goes).

But the just the general tendency in all of us is something that is amusing.

  8. Yeah I get what you are saying. There's callousness in Science in ways Art is not.

"I have kept Bergman in abeyance as far as according any greatnesss goes"
Isn't this one possible implication of being 'holier than thou'? No sweat, I am obsessively holier than thou. But I pose as a Muppet to hide excessive preening. :-D

  9. Danke, Herr Dagalti. That definitely, er, helps, paradoxically speaking. (By blowing up the "black and blue" font size you are trying to symbolically increase the pain on my eyes while improving readability, illa? Good try!).

And oh, completely with Muppet on the Bergman bit. That IS an implication of being holier than thou, you know? Humility romba ve kashtamaana vishayam saar but then again we shall not give up trying, lol.
