In the original story of Sakuntala, as told in the Mahabhratha, there is no ring. Sakuntala appears in Dushmanta's court with their son and requests Dushmanta to declare him the heir to his throne, as he had promised her, before their gandharva vivāham. Though Dushmanta very much remembers their encounter (and thus recognises legitimacy of the claim), he still pretends not to remember and asks her provocative, insulting questions in his court. But he is ' being cruel only to be kind '. For, this sets the dramatic stage for a fine articulation of her case by Sakuntala, which ends in the divine voice from the sky, declaring her to be true and for Dushmanta to accept her and their son. And then, Dushmanta tells his courtiers that he always knew but his word would have been insufficient proof to the court. We are of course, more aware of the storyline of KāLidāsa's play abhijñānasākuntalam, where the poet made significant departures. The elevation of the 'word/memory

Deletemanikkavasagr is not as central to Hinduism as JC to Xianity. Without JC and his claimed dvinity , Christianity woud collapse. As a Hindu , there are 3 RInas, Deva rin, Ptri Rin and Rishi Rin and all are equally important , so I can't sympathise with JC's exortation
Delete/mANikkavAsagar is not central to Hinduism as JC to Xinaity/
DeletePerhaps I should have been clearer in wording my analogy.
What I meant was: 'The exhortation to abandon all worldly attachments rightaway and to seek God', that vAsagar makes can be seen as analogous to what Christ says.
Either both urgings are touching or neither are.
Is Pitru karma enjoined on ascetics too? I thought it was only for grhstars.
And in any case, the line shines in a larger context than in the specific one here: that a clean harsh break from current ways is suggested for the Seeker.
In fact Christ makes an even harder statements in Matthew 10:34-10:37, that many find difficult to digest.

\Either both urgings are touching or neither are.\
DeleteThese are are different contexts. Mani gives a general propostion. Whereas JC is collecting his own followers, so he has an axe to grind when he talks to others . vasagar is not talking to anybody. Call me cynical, all talk - and non verbal communication- has a selfish social purpose, esp that of leaders
/vasagar was not talking to anybody/
DeleteWell, yes and no.
The yAthirai-paththu is addressed to fellow-devotees. One can still say it was not uttered to any particular person, context etc.
But to contrast that with the Bible would be to taken the bible story only literally. As if Christ was addressing the words to those listening then and there alone.
In fact, the exchange happens right after the great sermon the mount!
And when people are thronging to follow him after that, he tells them his path is not comfortable.
In fact the exact line before the one I have quoted, is something I like much more in Tamil than in the KJV :
Not a fan of JC . Not impressed with JC or his followers
