arundhavappanRi

Just Finished Reading Bharathi Krishnakumar 's arunthavappanRi (அருந்தவப்பன்றி). A very interesting book about a phase in Bharathi's life which has not been talked about much - either by his biographers or by himself. A phase of about six years - teens to early twenties and later a four month period- when he says poetry abandoned him.

One Situation - Two Poets

Kamban's RavaNan castigating VibeeshaNan and Bharathi's Duryodhanan castigating Vidhuran.

"He is.." In my opinion, there is no way to finish this sentence truthfully. Any way to finish that sentence is a rather impolite approximation that we make do with.

Saw Mahanagar last night. What a terrific film! With each Satyajit Ray film I watch I have this growing satisfaction that this is a filmmaker I 'get' - finally. So permit me a ramble before I get to the film Film Medium I have a distant relationship with the medium of film, which IMO is fraught with risks of miscommunication when attempting themes which are 'far out'. I expect a film to acknowledge a natural limitedness in scope and choose modest subjects becoming of it and execute them to perfection. Themes where at no time the viewer - that is me - is struggling to grapple with the 'core' - so to speak.

கம்பன் கவிச்சக்கரவர்த்தியா?

Appreciation, Criticism and the Artist

(an) ordinary emotional person, experiencing a work of art, has a mixed critical and creative reaction. It is made up of comment and opinion, and also new emotions which are vaguely applied to his own life. The sentimental person, in whom a work of art arouses all sorts of emotions which have nothing to do with that work of art whatever, but are accidents of personal association, is an incomplete artist. For in an artist these suggestions made by a work of art, which are purely personal, become fused with a multitude of other suggestions from multitudinous experience, and result in the production of a new object which is no longer purely personal, because it is a work of art itself.

I am deliberating not harping on the meaning that 'The Word' is a reference to the scriptures. For, without that, the simultaneous power and feebleness of the words is quite apparent in this e The excellent rhythm in these poems - which translator is best advised to not even attempt to match - is, IMO, quite central to the feeling of 'rapture' that they generate in the reader. Enjoy!

Dark Matter

Maureen Chao said after a long train ride she had turned 'dirty and dark like a Tamilian'. A joke, that hasn't gone down well. It seems very obvious to me that she meant 'dirty' as a description of herself at that point in time and 'dark as a Tamilian' is part that is contentious. But many people have taken it to me she DID mean 'dirty as a Tamilian' too which I find befuddling. Now is 'dark as a Tamilian' itself something to take offence to. Well, that depends.

இன்னதாம் என்னல் ஆமோ உலகியல்

Faithful readers of this blog, have been made painfully aware, of my bull-headed obsessions about believability in art . I enjoy only the totally convincingly 'real' or something spectacularly fable-like, struggle violently with most things in between. Who is to say, this is how things roll in 'reality'? After meeting Sita, Hanuman ravages through the Asokavanam, hoping his actions will take him to Ravana. Waves of warriors and chieftains are sent to fight him and they meet their gory ends in his hand.

What is scarier than the destruction of the world? That the whole thing is a random, arbitrary convulsion. That the universe is morally neutral and unimaginably violent. Now how do you say that in film? Well, you have someone say it.

Of Payon

To attempt to write a sober-faced humour-dissection essay is problematic. Firstly one, the essay declares itself to be anything but funny. Secondly,: to explain "what is funny" is an exercise in futility. if a joke is 'lost' on someone, rarely ever does a knowledgeable explanation of the benign transgression achieved by the joke, evoke in the listener the laugh, which was the objective of the joke. So I seek your sympathies upfront before beginning this post that seeks to explain Payon to the uninitiated.

The Love Lives of Lovable Men

Courage is many things to many people. To me, it is putting in full public view that which one wrote when in college:                                    The Love Lives of Lovable Men ‘Daschund puppies are cute’ The statement is subjective. But those who dare refute, Cannot share the adjective.

Madding Crowd

We like what we read when we can relate it to ourselves. And sometimes it takes some delusions of grandeur to be able to do so. I took to the crowd and the crowd took to me and yet I never lost myself in it;  always I felt apart from it. From my separate mental perch I looked at it critically, and I never ceased to wonder how I, who was so different in every way from those thousands who surrounded me, different in habits, in desires, in mental and spiritual outlook, how I managed to gain goodwill and a measure of confidence from these people. Was it because they took me for something other than I was? Would they bear with me if they knew me better? Was I gaining their goodwill under false pretences? I tried to be frank and straightforward to them; I even spoke harshly to them sometimes and criticized many of their pet beliefs and customs, but still they put up with me. And yet I could not get rid of the idea that their affection was meant not for me as I was, but for so

What a Man Wants - 2

Image
So what is so bleeding difficult about understanding this man? Mannarthudi Jeyakrishnan is the son of a judge and a confidant of a pimp, scion of an respectable clan and a reveller with drink buddies, a graduate who physically labours in his own fields,  penny pinching hard -bargainer who books the entire floor of a hotel for a friend's night out,  is blunt mannered in speaking and capable of nuanced expression.

What A Man Wants -Thoughts sparked by Thoovanathumbikal- Part I

"I just need someone who understands me. Whether it is Clara or Radha, it doesn't make a difference" So says an angry Mannarthudi Jeyakrishnan about the two women in his life. Radha is a smart, bold, college-going, distant relative of his. She had initially rebuffed his interests before slowly reconsidering her opinion.Clara was a extraordinarily intelligent and sensitive girl whom he met in the curious circumstance of initiating her into the flesh trade.Could they be more different? I shall cut to speculative sociopsychological musings now:

Wilde's Cricket

Why has my motley diary no jokes? Because it is a soliloquy and every man is grave alone - Emerson  A joke needs a listener. Perhaps it is as true of other art forms though the practitioners like to assert they find completeness in creation itself. But surely a joke is quite simply gauged by the laughs it earns. I don't know who coined it - Jay Leno perhaps-  the term 'cricket' refers to jokes that fell flat: the audience is so silent you can here the crickets chirping in the back of a set. It may have been too clever for the audience, it may have had one reference too many, it may have toyed with the boundaries of laughablity. But the fact is, it fell flat.

Thoroughly enjoyable. The release was organized by Bharathi Kalai kazhagam in Adyar.

Dotting the i's and other moo points

This post nitpicks a reasonably good article. K Klutch Klan - Tehelka. It is an article intended as a primer to those who know little about the TN political scene in general and Karunanidhi in particular. And to be fair to the writer, for the above stated objective, she does a pretty good job while also throwing in some interesting anecdotes, that I - who fancies himself quasi-literate here - didn't know about. Usually, I'd also channel in a ' those Delhiwallas don't bother checking TN details and seem to be writing in a way to best reach a North Indian audience '. But this time there was a mix of appropriate and inappropriate detailing, that I thought: ' perhaps this is as good as it gets when reporting about anything. So I better take my salt-pinches when reading articles about other parts of India too '. But the article had one too many ouch/funny moments. Details that could have been checked and some other slip-ups etc. that I want to bring up h

Why should I talk?

Image
நபர்1: கிழவி பேசாது.. கவுண்டமணி: பாடுமா? -பிரம்மா In my long history of forming and expressing opinions about storytelling, the most frequent complaint has been: "why does he talk?" Why should I talk? Why should I tell you my story? For you it is another story. For your amusement good sirs, I should reveal my triumphs and tribulations, my nadirs and insecurities? To what end? It is not that I do not want to. Everyone wants to. Only to very few and in very few occasions when one is convinced it makes sense to.
